Old Town

Old Town Overview
The Old Town and The Old Town Island are part of the Downtown Dubai development. ‘Old’ refers
to the architectural style in which this district was built; it was completed in 2006.
Located in the shadow of the world’s tallest building, Burj Khalifa, Old Town is a creditable
attempt to create a human scale quarter in the capital of this skyscraper city.

This is a pedestrianised residential district inspired by traditional Arabic architecture. There are
six discreet zones: Yansoon, Zaafaran, Reehan, Zanzebeel, Kamoon, and Miska. The 35
residential buildings are all low-rise from four to seven storeys. The district is in
close walking distance of Souk Al Bahar, Dubai Mall, Burj Khalifa and the Dubai Fountain.

Old Town Amenities

Being able to take a walk in a traffic free environment within a stone’s throw of the Dubai Mall
and Burj Khalifa comes top of most residents’ likes. The several shared pools are apparently
well maintained and universally liked. Other amenities include children’s play areas, a
gymnasium, aerobics room, squash courts, games room, entertainment lounge and coffee shops.

Those with apartments looking over the lake have fantastic views of the fountain displays and
the Burj, but people living on the street side of this district complain about the traffic noise
outside.

Nearby Souk Al Bahar has over a hundred shops including 22 restaurants, cafés and lounges,
and if that’s not enough you can step across the bridge and into the Dubai Mall, the biggest, etc,
etc.

The Opera District – Downtown Dubai

THE OPERA DISTRICT – DOWNTOWN DUBAI
The Opera District is the long awaited stylish cultural destination of Dubai. Located in Downtown Dubai it is set to promote the arts, culture, and events scene by ensuring global exchange and promoting local talent as well as serve as a vibrant events venue. Once completed this area will feature luxury hotels, elegantly designed residential and serviced apartments, a retail plaza, waterfront promenades, recreational spaces and parks.

Situated at the heart of this master project is Dubai Opera. A first of its kind in Dubai the Dubai Opera is a 2,000-seat multi-format venue for opera, theater, concerts, art exhibitions, orchestra, film, sports events, and seasonal programmes.

Set to become one of the most iconic buildings in Dubai, Dubai Opera is styled on the classic wooden dhows that are synonymous with the world-famous Dubai Creek. The state-of-the-art opera house along with the varied lifestyle components of The Opera District are set to energize Dubai’s events and tourism sectors.

The most sought after location within Downtown Dubai

Dubai Opera is a 2,000-seat, multi-format, performing arts centre, which is located within The Opera District in Downtown Dubai. It was developed by Emaar Properties to host a variety of performances and events including theatre, opera, ballet, concerts, conferences and exhibitions. Its plans were announced by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum in March 2012 and it was completed in 2016. It opened on 31 August 2016 with a performance by Plácido Domingo. The first season featured Bizet’s The Pearl Fishers opera and also the legendary tenor José Carreras. Dubai Opera have flat floor capacity of 1800 square meters. This floor can be hired for weddings, gala dinners, fashion shows and exhibitions.

In January 2015, Emaar named Jasper Hope as the Chief Executive of Dubai Opera. Hope was the COO of London’s Royal Albert Hall. Consolidated Contractors Company (CCC) was the main contractor for the development, having worked with Emaar in building the Dubai Mall.

An earlier proposal to build a cultural centre on an island in the Dubai Creek designed by architect Zaha Hadid was announced in 2008 and shelved during the property crash in Dubai. This venue, located in The Lagoons, would have accommodated an opera house with a 2,500 seating capacity, an 800-seat playhouse, a 5,000-square-metre (54,000 sq ft) arts gallery, a performing arts school, and a ‘6-star’ themed hotel. There is a free parking and paid parking for visitors of Dubai Opera. The Paid Parking is known as Green Parking.

The first Emirati singer to appear at Dubai Opera was Hussain Al Jassmi on 10th October 2016.

Shortly after that, the award winning hit musical Les Misérables graced the stage for a 3 week run.

In 2017 the venue staged the inaugural BBC Proms Dubai – just the second time ever that the United Kingdom’s premier classical music series hosted events abroad in its 112 year history.

Dubai Opera’s longest running show was the Phantom of the Opera in late 2019.

In just under 4 years of operating, Dubai Opera has won a number of awards including ‘Best Theatrical Performance’ at the Timeout Dubai Nightlife Awards 2017 for Les Misérables, ‘Favorite Show’ at the 2017 What’s On Awards Dubai for Les Misérables, and ‘Best Theatrical Performance’ at the Timeout Dubai Music and Nightlife Awards 2019 for Othello. Recognition was also given at the Timeout Dubai Music and Nightlife Awards 2019 to Dubai Opera’s Chief Executive Jasper Hope, where he was presented with the highly prestigious ‘Outstanding Contribution’ award.

The Trunk

Palm Jumeirah

Palm Jumeirah, artificial offshore islands in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, the site of private residences and hotels. From the air, the archipelago resembles a stylized palm tree within a circle. Palm Jumeirah was built in the early 21st century and was largely financed from Dubai’s substantial income from petroleum.

Trunk, spine, fronds, and crescent are the names by which the principal sectors of Palm Jumeirah are known. The broad trunk, connected to the mainland by a bridge, serves as the entrance to the development. Another bridge connects the trunk to the spine, a narrow central axis from which 17 fronds protrude. The crescent is a breakwater that nearly surrounds the other sectors. It is divided into three sections so as to facilitate the circulation of seawater. A vehicular tunnel connects the spine to the crescent, and a transit monorail runs about 3 miles (4.8 km) from the mainland to the crescent through the spine and trunk. The crescent is 650 feet (200 metres) wide and about 10.5 miles (17 km) long altogether. At least 1,380 acres (560 hectares) of new land were created in all, within an area about 3.1 miles (5 km) in diameter.

The developer of Palm Jumeirah was Nakheel, a real estate company now owned by the government of Dubai. The master plan was drawn up by Helman Hurley Charvat Peacock, an American architectural firm. The islets were made mostly from sand dredged from the floor of the Persian Gulf, but the side of the crescent that is exposed to the open sea was shored up with stones and boulders from the mainland. Work started in 2001, and land and basic infrastructure were in place by 2004. Construction of the buildings began in 2006, and the first residents arrived in 2007.

Apartments, retail facilities, and a few hotels are situated on the trunk. Closely spaced villas line the long fronds, while most of the hotels and resorts are located on the crescent. In the second decade of the 21st century, at least 10,000 people lived in Palm Jumeirah; some estimates were much higher.

Palm Jumeirah was intended to be the first of three similarly shaped offshore developments in Dubai. The others, Palm Jebel Ali and Palm Deira, are both much larger than Palm Jumeirah but remain uncompleted because of economic uncertainty. Also incomplete is the World, a grouping of artificial islands that is intended, upon completion, to resemble a map of the world.
